Neal and Coleen Walters

Suzy & EricThompson
Neal has been playing stringed instruments and performing for over 50 years. A passionate singer, he typically accompanies himself on mountain dulcimer, guitar, and autoharp, though he also plays fiddle, banjo, mandolin, and bass. He was a member of the Mill Run Dulcimer Band for more than 20 years, recording eight albums with the group. Neal also performed with the band Doofus, alongside his wife, Coleen, and Connecticut musicians John and Heidi Cerrigione. Doofus released four albums and was known for its warm harmonies and traditional roots.

Coleen is a nationally recognized artist in her own right. For over 30 years, she was an accomplished quilter and a member of FiberWorks, a cooperative studio at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA. Her teaching credits include the International Quilt Festival, Quilt Surface Design Symposium, NQA Annual Shows, and Quilter’s Heritage Celebration, among many others. Her work has been featured in several national quilt magazines, and her quilts and wearable art have been exhibited across the United States and internationally. Coleen brought her creativity and harmony vocals to Doofus, where she also played bass.

Together, Neal and Coleen continue to share their love of traditional music through performance and teaching. They are both board members of the Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering and have each been inducted into the Autoharp Hall of Fame.
