Ray Frank has been actively making music for more than 50 years. An eclectic musician, his playing is based on an abiding love for traditional music from around the world.
Ray grew up in New York City where he studied classic guitar, banjo, mandolin, bass, and percussion. He got his first autoharp (which he still has) while in high school after falling in love with the music of the Carter Family. It was Ray’s devotion and passion of the Carter Family that inspired the 3rd California Autoharp Gathering’s (2005) tribute to the Carter Family.
Now, he performs, records, arranges, produces, and teaches music and is in great demand as an accompanist. He also is an instrument maker.
Ray’s American Old-Time music duo named “Stump Tail Dog” has released two recordings. He has also released a CD, “Fingerpickin’ Pals” with Les Gustafson-Zook (autoharp & guitar) after the two of them did an all-night jam at an early CAG. Ray is also involved in numerous recording projects, concert productions, and is on the Board of the San Francisco Folk Music’s annual “Camp Harmony Musical Gathering.”
Ray has become a crowd favorite here at the California Autoharp Gathering. Ray was a CAG “Lifetime Achievement Award” winner in 2008. We truly welcome back his warm and friendly personality, his appreciation for old-time music, his outstanding workshops and his dynamic guitar playing. A charter staff member, this will be Ray’s seventh visit to the CAG.
